An estimated 5.7 mn Indian workers abroad sent home $27 bn in 2007 to make India the top receiver of migrant remittances while the US was the main remittance source, according to latest World Bank data.

Shrikrishna Kalamb was a Marathi farmer and poet who committed suicide due to perpetual debt and worries. Mr. Kalamb was one of those 150,000 farmers have taken their lives in the past decade as a result of liberalization policies in the agricultural sector.
